In Jerusalem, demonstration of the ultraconservative force before a week of all dangers

The United States must install their embassy in the Holy City on Monday, while in Gaza on Tuesday will mark the day of the commemoration of the exodus of Palestinians during the creation of Israel in 1948.

Chants. Banners. Slogans and banners. As every year, on May 13, for the Day of Jerusalem, religious Zionism currents mobilized on Sunday thousands of young people to participate in a "march of the flags" under the walls of the old city. But this time, the procession took a particular tone, in the general euphoria that preceded the US Embassy's move to Jerusalem on Monday during a week of high security risk. The eyes are indeed turned towards the Gaza Strip, for the peak of demonstrations along the border.

Most of the participants are teenagers supervised by rare adults and accompanied by girls, many fewer, with their hair wrapped in large scarves. On the forecourt of the Damascus Gate, one of the main meeting points, they flock to large thundering groups.

Dressed in T-shirts with the names of their religious schools and braided kippas, they came from all over the country and from the colonies to enter the narrow streets of the predominantly Palestinian and Muslim neighborhoods in the ramparts. And that they hardly attend at other times of the year.

"We are here at home"

Jerusalem Day celebrates the Israeli victory in the Six-Day War of 1967 and the entry of the army into the Old City of Jerusalem, which houses the Wailing Wall, at the foot of the Mosque Esplanade (Mt. Temple). For religious Zionists, ranked on the far right of the political spectrum of Israel, this date marks the beginning of an unfinished reconquest of the holy city, replayed each year after a political procession has become a usual spectacle.
